{"id":1139,"date":"2019-04-02T04:40:03","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T04:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.awanuilabs.co.nz\/north\/auckland\/?page_id=1139"},"modified":"2026-03-17T16:55:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T03:55:24","slug":"urine-specimen-for-culture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.awanuilabs.co.nz\/north\/auckland\/for-patients\/preparing-for-my-test\/urine-specimen-for-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Urine Specimen for Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><u>PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important &#8211; Specimen labelling and delivery: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ensure full first and last names and date of birth (dd\/mm\/yy) are clearly written on the specimen tube<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ensure date and time of collection is written on the request form and specimen tube<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It is important to take your urine specimen to your nearest Awanui Labs collection centre as soon as possible (within 2 hours); if there is a delay please keep the urine in the fridge.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Females<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Wash your hands  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a urine container ready <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold labia (lips of vagina) apart <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass a small amount of urine into the toilet &#8211; do not collect any of the 1st part of the urine <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass a small amount or urine into container (so that the middle part of urine is collected) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass remaining urine into toilet <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull top off urine tube <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour urine from plastic container into tube, no more than half full and replace top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pregnant women <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Midstream urine specimens from pregnant women are often contaminated with vaginal cells and bacteria due to natural changes associated with pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, it is best to collect your midstream urine <strong>immediately after taking a shower<\/strong>, following the above instructions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Males <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Wash hands <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull foreskin back (if applicable) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have urine container ready <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass a small amount of urine into toilet and do not collect any of the 1st part of the urine <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass a small amount of urine into container (so that the middle part of urine is collected) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass remaining urine into toilet <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put foreskin back in place <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull top off urine tube <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour urine from plastic container into tube, no more than half full and replace top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>NOTE<\/strong>:<\/em> <em>Catheter Bag urine and Paediatric Bag urine samples for bacterial culture are not recommended and will not be processed by the laboratory. &nbsp;Growth usually indicates contamination with perineal flora and results should not be used to guide clinical management. &nbsp;Instead, a urine dipstick may be done on paediatric bag urine at point-of-care by healthcare provider to aid clinical decision making.&nbsp; Urine culture for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection requires a clean-catch sample as per <a href=\"https:\/\/aucklandregion.communityhealthpathways.org\/12626.htm\">HealthPathways guidance<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS Important &#8211; Specimen labelling and delivery: Females Pregnant women Midstream urine specimens from pregnant women are often contaminated with vaginal cells and bacteria due to natural changes associated with pregnancy.
