Strike action – Monday February 5

On Monday February 5 there will be a complete withdrawal of labour by Awanui Labs APEX union members. Laboratory service changes are outlined as below:

Nelson region >>

Collection services:

  • Note: *From 08:30 – 15:30hrs some tests will only be available by using the life preserving service pathway.  Hospital clinicians will be able to send their critically urgent requests to the laboratory and the laboratory will advise the referrer for which tests LPS approval are needed.

Biochemistry and Haematology:

  • Life preserving services only                  00:01 – 08:30 hours
  • Critically urgent service only                  08:30 – 23:59 hours

Transfusion Services:

  • Consider empiric treatment where appropriate and only submit samples where results alter patient management. 
  • Please note, results may be delayed for non-urgent/routine Microbiology tests (e.g. H. pylori, fungi)

To help the laboratory teams manage the workload during the strike period we ask that any non-urgent microbiology testing work from Nelson and Marlborough is deferred from Saturday 3 February to Tuesday 6 February 2024.  From Wednesday 7th February normal microbiology service will resume.

*Life Preserving Services:

The Code defines Life Preserving services to mean:

  1. Crisis intervention for the preservation of life;
  2. Care required for therapeutic services without which life would be jeopardised;
  3. Urgent diagnostic procedures required to obtain information of potentially life-threatening conditions;
  4. Crisis intervention for the prevention of permanent disability;
  5. Care required for therapeutic services without which permanent disability would occur;
  6. Urgent diagnostic procedures required to obtain information on conditions that could potentially lead to permanent disability.
