Awanui Labs has identified that between April and 11 July 2025, some HbA1c test results in Wellington and Taranaki may have been higher than expected. After discussions with local PHOs and Health NZ, Awanui Labs are taking a cautious approach and contacting potentially affected patients directly to repeat their HbA1c blood test at no cost.
Letters have been mailed by Awanui Labs to affected patients this week and a test e-order has been created in advance of these patients presenting for retesting at Awanui collection centres. We ask that you do not also order a retest for these patients as this is already in our system.
A patient information website, and support phone line and email have been set up. You can learn more about these here.
Results will come to the enrolled provider for review, as they will need to be interpreted in context of any lifestyle interventions or other adjustments. Patients have been advised via the letter that results will be communicated by usual practice method, and it suggests that for people with a portal they check this for a comment rather than contact the practice.
Awanui Labs have tried to minimise the impact of this retest on practices. Patients are welcome to phone our contact line about their retest at 0800 747 395 or email myretest@awanuilabs.co.nz. Please refer to your PHOs for full details & further information.
