Illumiscreen – Pre-Natal Screening

Illumiscreen – Pre-Natal Screening

Illumiscreen is a non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) test, also commonly referred to as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT).

It is a simple blood test that screens pregnancies for chromosomal conditions by analysing genetic material from the placenta circulating in the mother’s blood. Illumiscreen provides screening across all 23 pairs of chromosomes, detecting conditions such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome. It can also screen for differences in sex chromosomes, as well as selected microdeletions including Cri du Chat, Angelman syndrome, and DiGeorge syndrome.

NIPS offers the highest sensitivity and specificity for Down syndrome among available prenatal screening tests and can be performed from 10 weeks’ gestation onwards.

Illumiscreen is supported by genetic specialists who can provide counselling, education, and support around potential screening outcomes. Where required, genetic counsellors can liaise with the referring healthcare provider regarding further diagnostic options and are also available to speak directly with patients.

The Illumiscreen test is available for both single and twin pregnancies. It is the only NIPS processed end-to-end in New Zealand and is accessible through more than 150 Awanui collection centres nationwide.
