Home visit service update

Awanui Labs Auckland is undertaking a review of its Home Visit service to ensure it continues to support patients with the greatest clinical need, in line with the eligibility criteria set by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora.

Home visits are reserved for:

  • Patients who are bedridden and unable to attend a collection centre due to medical reasons, or
  • Special medical cases that are clearly documented.

When a request does not meet eligibility criteria or further clinical information is required, referrers will now receive notification by:

  • HL7 messages (for eOrders), or
  • Email responses (for email referrals).

Requests submitted without sufficient information to determine the patient meets the eligibility criteria will be redirected as Collection Centre referrals.

Patients who are able to attend GP clinics, hospital outpatients, or day stay appointments without ambulance transport are not considered eligible for home visits under the current funding guidelines Wheelchair use or disability alone does not automatically meet the criteria. Our collection centres are wheelchair accessible and often better equipped to support patients with additional needs. If your patient has a specific medical or behavioural barrier that may prevent safe or appropriate access to a collection centre, we welcome further details for review. If you are unsure whether a patient qualifies or would like to discuss a case, please contact our Home Visit Administration Team:

We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us deliver care to those who need it most.  For more detail, see our updated Home Visit FAQ
