Children under 10 years old

Taking blood from babies and young children can be difficult. This is due to their small veins and also the fact they don’t always understand what is happening or why. In order to make this experience as easy as we can, we only take blood from under 10s when two Phlebotomists are present.

Note: If you choose to apply Emla cream (local anaesthetic) to your child’s arms prior to testing, please apply to the inside of the elbows of both arms one hour prior to your appointment. Emla cream can be purchased from most pharmacies.

Appointments for children cannot be booked online – please call us on 03 359 0900 to arrange an appointment. This helps to reduce waiting time and anxiety before your appointment.

Some clinics may not be able to see children at certain times due to staffing availability.
