From the week beginning 27 July 2026, Awanui Laboratories Wellington will no longer process, or report urine dipstick results submitted to the laboratory.

Urine dipsticks are classified as point-of-care testing (POCT) devices and are intended to be performed, interpreted, and acted upon at the point of care by the requesting healthcare provider. From the 27^th of July, Awanui Laboratories Wellington will cease urine dipstick testing, and urine requests for dipsticks will not be accepted for laboratory processing or reporting.

For the investigation and monitoring of kidney disease, including kidney function, clinicians are encouraged to refer to their local HealthPathways guidance to ensure that the most appropriate laboratory tests are requested.
